Kill Germs, Not Pets

Long story short, my kitten died due to an undetermined cause. After that, I became very cautious with what I used around the house that could potentially kill my remaining cat and have negative effects on nature during production and disposal. Cats are super sensitive to everything from plants to toothpaste.

One step I took was to examine and change what I used to clean at home.

These common chemicals are TOXIC to your pets:

  1. Ammonia (Windex, multi surface cleaners, fertilizers, cleaners)

  2. Chlorine (Bleach)

  3. Formeldahyde (Used as anti-bacterial)

  4. Glycol Ethers (AKA 2-Methoxyethanol, 2-Ethoxyethanol, 2-Butoxyethanol)

  5. Phthalates (Used as fragrances)

I cannot stand having a million things in my cupboard that only have 1 use. It adds up when you have five million specialty ingredients in the kitchen and five million cleaning products. I hate it; it's clutter, expensive and time consuming. Enter VINEGAR, CASTILLE SOAP and BAKING SODA. My new BFFs <3

Yes, it takes some time to get used to the smell of a little bit of vinegar, but it goes away quickly. My boyfriend has stopped complaining about the switch. If it bothers you, let things do their magic and then spray with water to wipe everything away after.

SWAPS

Scrubbers

- Old plastic net bags (from produce or cheese)

  1. Save them up until you have maybe 4 or 5

  2. Scrunch part of it up in a small ball, twist leaving more netting on the open side, loop it back over on itself and keep doing this until you are done

I am a fan of this method over the sewn pretty ones because you can easily take these apart to clean when food or dirt/grime get stuck in it and then re-loop it back on itself.

Multi Surface Cleaner (Just eyeball it, it doesn't need to be exact)

- 50% Vinegar

- 50% Water

- Optional: A couple squirts of Unscented Castille Soap*

*The soap breaks down the fat membrane of COVID19 killing it

Tub & Sink Cleaner (Works well on those nasty dirt rings)

- Multi Surface Cleaner

- Baking Soda

1. Spray the Multi Surface Cleaner on the surfaces you are cleaning. This gives the

baking soda something to stick to.

2. Sprinkle the baking soda on particularly grimey spots

3. Let it do its magic for 15 min

4. Put in a little elbow grease and scrub away with a toothbrush and/or the DIY scrubber

Glass/Mirror

- 1/2 Cup Vinegar

- 1 Cup Rubbing Alcohol

- 2 Cups Water

  1. Spray your magic mirror (so you can check yourself out when you walk by) and your windows (so your spying neighbours can see how good you look)

  2. Take some old newspaper/LCBO bags/ads printed on newspaper and wipe all that off

Feel free to copy and modify the below to attach to your Multi Surface Cleaner spray bottle. It made my bf feel guilty if he didn't use it. Plus it's super cute and geek chic.
